Destination of the week: Montenegro

Reported: Independent Newspaper UK 7th January 2012

The small Adriatic nation is about to get a new connection from Britain. On 25 March, Montenegro Airlines (020-7864 403 ; starts a scheduled link from Gatwick to the coastal airport of Tivat. It will operate on Sundays and Wednesdays. At present, the main approach is via Dubrovnik airport in the far south of Croatia. Test bookings suggests that the standard lowest fare is €245 (about £210), but Explore Montenegro (020-7118 1002; is offering a fare of £189 return for bookings as part of a package by 31 January. A representative from Montenegro Forum an expat community based in Montenegro spoke with Doug Matthieson, the owner of "Explore Montenegro" who is based in Herceg Novi and discovered that the discounted flights that are mentioned on his website from Gatwick to Tivat are conditional on booking a holiday package with his company. However, he did offer a possible useful link with forum members who have quality property to let. If a property meets his criteria for quality and owners are willing to offer their property to his company for rentals, then they too will have access to the discounted flights.

Montenegro Airlines will go bust, huge debts, they can't even pay their airport landing fees.
£190 minimum return fare from london gatwick, far too high,if booked well in advance easyjet to Dubrovnik, return fare £85>£90,less than half the price.

If Ryanair fly into Tivat, not that concrete carbuncle Podgorica, montenegro airlines demise will be even faster.

Air fares, car hire all too expensive in monty, they will learn the hard way about being competitive!
